Back to School

It's that time again. With just one month left of summer before school officially begins for many students, we are already bombarded by the media in an effort to prepare us for the upcoming school term. Newspaper circulars from area retailers beckon our attention to everything from school supplies, clothes, dorm room accessories to hi-tech electronic organizing gadgets. While "Back to School" is music to many parents' ears, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in our home.

In just a few short weeks my five-year old son will start kindergarten. This past week, we began preparing him for the beginning of what will be many long years of schooling. Each night we talked about some things he will do in kindergarten. To get him excited about going to "big boy school," we set aside a few mintues each night before bedtime to help him "get his desk ready" for school. Watching him smile as we gave him simple items such as an desktray to hold pencils, erasers and crayons was a real joy. While these next few weeks will bring us a new school schedule with many new "to-dos," I look forward to this new chapter in our lives.

US Senator Elizabeth Dole is this month's featured North Carolinian. Journal contributor Marilyn Sprague-Smith had the opportunity to interview Senator Dole during a brief 45 minute meeting at the Senator's home in Salisbury. As one might imagine, getting a time slot on the Senator's very hectic schedule was a great stroke of luck and timing.

Regardless of your political party affiliation, I hope that as you read about Senator Dole's commitment to public service, you will come away feeling inspired by one woman's lifelong pursuit to help those in need and to make a difference in the lives of others. As Senator Dole references some of her "sheroes" and role models who helped shape her career path along the way, she mentions Margaret Chase Smith. Smith had taken the time to entertain Dole's questions about a career path. Senator Dole says this was an example of how women need to take the time to help other women. I agree.

Part of the reason The North Carolina Journal for Women was started was to do just that. To bring together women who offer advice and share their perspectives in an online environment was one of the primary objectives for starting the Journal. If you have questions or even suggestions for any of the Journal contributors, myself included, I encourage you to contact any of us.

New to the Journal this month is the "@Your Own Business" section. With the expanding growth of women-owned businesses, we felt the need to include this as a new section to help those of you who are thinking about starting your own business. Mary Cantando and Lea Strickland, two new Journal contributors, will address issues and questions in this area and also bring you "Winning Ideas from Winning Women."

Coming this fall we will feature a great North Carolina get-away spot in the western part of the State. If you have a favorite spot that you would like for us to consider featuring, send us the name and website of your favorite place. Also include what you like about the get-away spot.
