Happy holidays and welcome to the
North Carolina Journal for Women!

It gives me great joy in giving you what has been several months in the making. After several long months in the planning and development stage, I am pleased to finally present to you the very first issue of this online women's publication.

When the idea struck me to develop what has now become this site, I knew that it had to be something different, something special and most of all, something that would allow me to reach out and connect with other women at once. As the days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months, ideas, like visions of sugarplums, danced about in my head. What should I call the site? What and who should the site be about? How and where would I find interesting and meaningful content that would be worthy of returning readers? Where would I possibly find the time to weave all of this together while working a full time job, keeping house, and caring for my family. My list of questions grew bigger and bigger. But so did my excitement! I began to put my ideas, concepts and action items down on paper. What started out as a seemingly simple idea several months back had taken firm root and quickly snowballed into an unstoppable self-driven project.

Just a note, too. You'll notice that throughout the site many words have been bolded. These "scan words" will help your eyes glide across each page of interest so that you can move on to the next page, read what's important to you, and move on with the rest of your day. Think of the bolded and highlighted words as paragraph and text anchor points. Not only is plain text is flat and boring, but it also causes eye strain. Hyperlinks will, as usual, be underlined and in blue.

In this first issue, you will meet several great women who have chosen to write short articles that might be of interest to you. As the site grows, so will the links to other fun and interesting content areas. I welcome AND invite your participation and feedback on ways to improve the site and content, which women to feature, and so on. If you know someone who has an interesting story to share, please have her contact me. Ideally, my objective for this online publication is to mirror other women's magazines, but on a much smaller scale. Each month the content will vary, so make sure you "pick up a copy" online of the next month's issue.

A few weeks ago, I began asking myself who should I feature on the very first "front cover" of the NCJournalforWomen.com. Several ideas came to mind, and as holiday season approached with all of the fun-filled commercials for children's toys the answer became clear. Before I tell you how and why I decided on the cover person, let me tell you about my four and half year old son. As each day passed taking us closer to the biggest spending season of the year, the television channels became packed with more and more toy commercials. And with each toy commercial that splashed across the screen, my son, who is at that age of believing in Santa Claus, has said everyday without fail, "Mom, put that on my list!" or "Tell Santa to bring me that toy; I want that on my Santa Claus list, too." Given the frequency of how often I hear those words, I decided to make up my own list for Santa, give it to him personally and have some fun of my own. Take a look and you will see. What fun I had visiting Santa. Too many long years have passed since I sat on the jolly ol' man's lap. It did bring back childhood memories of long ago.

And so, as that old familiar holiday story is told over and over again, year in and year out, I hope you will take the time to enjoy the season and take time for yourself. Perhaps you will indulge yourself this season and have your photo taken with Santa!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
