Behind every successful woman or man stands a support group of terrific people. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” the same can be said about building, running and maintaining a successful business operation.

This month’s cover woman is Elsie Phillips, the woman behind one of the most successful women in real estate in the state. You’ll hear about Elsie’s decision to leave her own business so that she could have more quality time with what’s most important to her: her family. While most of us would probably like to be able to spend more time with our most precious treasures, our families, we know, too, that there are tradeoffs between work and family. Finding the right balance is crucial to maintaining harmony, not only within the family and at work, but also within us.

What’s new this month?

While browsing through a local bookstore one day during the Christmas holidays, I came across a beautifully designed recipe book. I use the words "recipe book" instead of "cookbook,” as this book seemed to call out to me as I passed by the bookstore display. Upon opening and skimming through the pages, I knew there had to be something special contained within the front and back covers. As I read the author's introduction, I realized that this book was not only about food with a bunch of recipes thrown together, but one focused on creating special memories and setting aside the Sunday dinner as a time for family togetherness. You’ll see what I mean when you read the “Sunday Memories” article written by author and twelve-year Blair House chef, Russell Cronkhite.

Who loves to CRUISE? This month you’ll notice a new section titled “@Play.” Here you’ll read about choosing the right cruise for you. Each month in the @Play section we will feature fun things to do and fun places to go. Don’t miss it. Tell us what you’d like to see here.

In addition to the “A Return to Sunday Dinner” cookbook featured this month in the book corner, we also feature three new self-development books: The Princess Principle, Unlocking the Secrets of Successful Women in Business, and How to Get Men to Take You Seriously – all very worthwhile reads.

Other newcomers this month include Janis Ramquist who will discuss the rising interest in YOGA and the healthful benefits Yoga can provide from a spiritual, mental and physical standpoint. For those of us who could use a bit of rebalancing in our lives, perhaps Yoga could provide a much-needed focus on the self.

Salad please...lettuce only. Meet Jackie Stanley whose weight loss and motivational work has recently been featured in Essence magazine and USA Today. Jackie offers you the one-pound-a-month challenge to lose weight.

When was your last Booster Shot? No, I don’t mean the inoculation kind. I mean the communication kind that will help you in your day-to-day communications with others. Dr. Susanne Gaddis, PhD, also known as the communications doctor, will give you two tips on how to make yourself a bestseller.

The Journal is interested in your comments and suggestions on how to improve this publication. What topics are of interest toyou; what fun places would you like to read about and possibly experience? Tell us…we want to know. Send your suggestions to us.

Coming next month…meet North Carolina’s first African American female mayor.

See you next month…
