"Follow your passion
to live your dreams."

When July comes around each year, many of us are either planning or undertaking the family summer vacation. Whether it be a simple get-away down at the coast or something more exotic, summer vacations are a time to escape from our every day routines and spend quality time with family. This July is particularly special for my husband and me given that we are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. To commemorate our anniversary we recently embarked on a trip back to Bermuda, our honeymoon destination.

A lucky bride with groom, Bryan.
July 1994.

Why Bermuda? Several reasons. The beautiful and clean beaches, the scenic white-topped homes carefully nestled along Bermuda's winding roads and hillsides and the friendly Bermudians, too. But most of all we returned to Bermuda to recapture the memories and fun we had ten years ago. In the "@Play" section next month, you'll discover more about Bermuda and be able to view some photos of this tropical paradise.

In this month’s issue, two articles within the “@ Play” section are geared towards vacations. In the first article, Liza Weidle talks about some of the best parts of a summer family vacation and how these trips can help renew and strengthen family bonds. In the second article, Kay Allred talks about the various travel clubs and “themed” vacations that allow you to travel with others that either share your interest and enthusiasm in traveling to particular destination or just share common interests.

Our featured North Carolinian this month is Valeria Lee, President of The Golden Leaf Foundation. In her position as President, she oversees one-half of the tobacco settlement funds North Carolina receives and works to ensure the long-term economic strength in our communities across the state. Lee sees her role in the Foundation as a "one-time opportunity" to help former tobacco-dependant communities transition into something else, she also sees both the joy and burden of helping communites make the most of their resources. As overseer of the grant-making and community investment process at the Foundation, Lee is one of North Carolina's women to watch. Special thanks to Allen Hinnant Photography of Rocky Mount for the Lee's photo shoot.

Next month's featured North Carolinian will be US Senator Elizabeth Dole. Also coming next month will be a new section titled, "@Your Own Business" and will feature two new columnists.

Until next month, I hope you'll be @your best self!
