Special thanks to Jimmy Allen of Creative Image for this month's cover shoot.

This month's cover woman is the Honorable Jennifer Weiss, 35th District Representative, North Carolina House of Representatives. Representative Weiss is Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Children, Youth and Families. When asked to identify some of the pressing issues facing North Carolina, Weiss stated that "we’re facing a childhood obesity explosion."

As a wife and mother of two small children, this concerns me as I often struggle with meal planning. Planning the family meals is as much a guessing game as it is a balancing act in that small children tend to find a handful of dishes they like and won't try something new. Hot dogs and macaroni & cheese are staples in my home. But how nutritious can they possibly be? Trying to find a common dish that is healthy, tasteful and one that the whole family will enjoy is a goal that many moms seek to attain. Why do some moms seem to attain this goal more effortlessly than others? Is there a special "recipe" for getting the family to try new dishes and to eat healthier meals?

In one of this month's featured book "Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family," Ellyn Satter, a registered dietician and internationally recognized authority on eating and feeding addresses these such questions and more. From planning, shopping and preparing the meals, Satter shares some of her "secrets in a nutshell." In "Lettuce is Not Enough: Eating Outside Your Box," Journal writer Jackie Stanley says that we should challenge long-held notions about what we eat and to try new things by seeking new avenues of choosing a variety of foods. Jackie says, "Dare to step out of our comfort zones and try new things." If only I could get my children to step out of their comfort zones and try new things!

Planning fun summer parties and need some great ideas for themes? Then you'll definitely want to look at Diane Warner's Big Book of Parties. This book has over 175 ideas for all types of parties, plus a section titled "Party Planning 101." If you know someone who enjoys having parties, be sure to tell them about Diane's book.

Congratulations to all 13 winners in the April "Read to Succeed" book giveaway. Each month the Journal will sponsor a book giveaway promotion to our subscribers. Winners are chosen through a random drawing of interested participants. All that is needed to enter the book giveaway is a simple email indicating your interest in the featured book. Entries can be submitted through the end of the current month. Entries may be submitted through 6pm on the last day of the month.
