It's in the Air!

Now that summer is officially over, Fall is definitely in the air! As the cool, crisp days approach, signs of Fall appear all around us. From the highways and byways to the scenery in our own backyards, Fall transforms our landscape into a warm splendid display of browns, reds and golden yellows that are so characteristic of Autumn. This time of year offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the western part of our Old North State. With this in mind the Journal takes a virtual tour of one of North Carolina's finest and oldest country inns, The Greystone Inn on Lake Toxaway. With the Inn's permission, we spotlight the Greystone Inn as our featured R & R Hot Spot for this month. Thank you all for your suggestions on North Carolina places to visit.

With the onset of Fall, the Great North Carolina State Fair is just a couple of weeks away. As a youngster in a small Alabama town, I remember the excitement of the annual fair's arrival. It wasn't until I moved to North Carolina that I actually experienced a fair on a much larger scale. This month author AlexSandra Lett writes so vividly about her childhood memories at the county fair that you can almost smell the sweet aromas of the cotton candy and caramel apples and hear the laughter and thrills spilling from the many rides at the fair.

October is also another very important time for this month's featured North Carolinians. Meet the Honorable Becky Smothers, Mayor, City of High Point, and Judy Mendenhall, President, International Home Furnishings Market Authority. These two really "go way back," as they became close personal friends from the early 1960s. Not only have their personal lives paralleled and crossed, but so too have their professional lives. Read their story and see how two women can impact the direction of an area's (High Point) economic standing while remaining close personal friends.

Don't miss the chance to win this month's featured books, Breast Cancer Answers and They Don't Teach Corporate in College: A Twenty-Something's Guide to the Business World. The publisher for these two books, Career Press, will be offering six copies of EACH book as Journal give-aways. Many thanks to Linda Reinecker at Career Press for her help.

Have a wonderful October and please feel free to contact me if you have an idea for a story, a suggestion to improve the Journal, or if you would like to become a contributor.

Best Regards,

Paula Monahan
