Serious Illness can be a Blessing –
A Reminder of Ignored Messages
and Needed Changes |
Dr. Shivani Goodman,
an award-winning psychologist, did just that … She
ignored repeated messages from her body. Instead
of slowing down, resting, and recognizing the warning signs,
she worked harder. After all, she had been teaching
others about self-healing for 20 years. Then the
diagnosis … Dr. Goodman
had breast cancer.
For the next two
years Dr. Goodman followed
the traditional route of surgery, chemotherapy and then
a lumpectomy.
She tried special diets, vitamins, healing herbs, detoxing
her body and even a sweat lodge. After the third
and most serious recurrence of breast cancer, Dr. Goodman
refused medical intervention. Although her physician
warned her that the cancer would soon end her life, Dr.
Goodman began exploring the possibility that self-healing,
the mind-body connection, would also work with cancer. The
result is the program she developed while healing her own
cancer, 9 Steps for Reversing
or Preventing Cancer and Other Diseases: Learn to Heal from
Within.
Prior
to the cancer, Dr. Goodman had founded a biofeedback
center and became known for her expertise in reversing psychosomatic
disorders. By combining gestalt therapy, biofeedback
and self-hypnosis, a variety of psychological and physiological
disorders were alleviated. This time, however, Dr.
Goodman found her answer in a field of western scientific
research called Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI).
When broken into parts,
PNI means: The thoughts (psycho) affect the nervous
system (neuro) which affect the immune system (immunology).
Working closely with
Dr. O. Carl Simonton, a medical doctor, radiation oncologist
and pioneer in mind/body medicine, Dr.
Goodman confirmed that “the thoughts, attitudes, beliefs
and images we hold in our mind affect our emotions, nervous
system and immune system.” According
to Dr. Goodman, unresolved emotions and toxic attitudes
create internal conflict, which causes continuous stress
on body systems – and chronic
stress breaks down the immune system. This
is the process identified by scientists and reported in
medical journals and newspapers. The following was in the
New York Times (5/13/93):
“Scientists
have found the first evidence of an anatomical connection
between the nervous system and the immune system. Nerve
