Organizing 101
It really
is the most wonderful time of the year--it is back
to school time--the perfect time to make resolutions;
just like New Year. I love the idea of a fresh start for
fall; it is a great time of the year to evaluate the various
things around you that need to be put in order and organized.
The beginning of the school
year is the end of Yo-yo scheduling for a lot of women.
Would
you like to spend some time outdoors, clear your cluttered
head, and accomplish a necessary task--all at the
same time? I have the perfect solution and just in time
for all the carpooling, chauffeuring duties that are about
to begin. One of the quickest, easiest jobs to tackle is
the interior of your car. Cars are not supposed to have
the eclectic look. Therefore, the
first step is to get rid of, or purge, your car of items
that aren't necessary.
Step
One
Grab a large trash bag and a box--throw away items
get tossed into the trash bag and items that belong elsewhere
(like in the house or garage) go into the box. Do
not get out of the car and start putting away items in different
locations; that will only set you up for failure.
Distractions are a huge reason folks don't succeed
at organizing projects. Stay focused!
Step
Two
Mentally divide your car into
3 zones: The front seats, the back seats, and the cargo
or trunk area. Purge all three areas of
items that aren't necessary including coins, wrappers, CDs
you haven't listened to in a while, and movies the kids
aren't watching anymore--if you have a DVD player.
It is easier to do any job--regardless
of how large it is-- if it is broken into "bite-sized"
pieces.
Step
Three
Decide on a "home"
--located near the driver--for
the following items in your car. In order
to be successful organizing anything--papers, mail, or your
car--you need to have a place for everything--and make it
a habit to put things back in that same place.

Step
Four
Vacuum the carpet and seats.
Tip: To remove pet hair from
cloth seats there is a product made by Evercare--a mitt that
is amazingly effective;
sold at www.drugstore.com for under $5.00.
Shampoo the carpet in your car
Tip: If your carpet or upholstery is stained, visit
www.QueenOfClean.com website for stain removal advice.
Clean the windows
Wipe down seats and surfaces
with a fresh, damp cloth.
Tip: pre moistened Clorox wipes are perfect for this.
Step
Five
While
things are fresh and clean, start thinking of items that
would help you while driving around. Make
a list of things you NEED to purchase vs. things you WANT
to purchase. For example, in the not too distant future
you will need an ice scraper. Plan ahead and get one on
your list--next time you are in a large store--get to the
auto section and purchase one; being
organized is planning ahead!
You
may need cargo organizational goodies or pet accessories.
Below, I've listed my favorite websites (in alphabetical
order) for clients who prefer to shop online.
www.ajprindle.com
www.axius.com
www.casedirect.com
www.drivewerks.com
www.ebags.com
www.lillianvernon.com
Step
Six
Place a bar of great smelling
soap like Irish Spring or Zest, unwrapped, under the driver's
seat. Every time you get in your car you
will be greeted by a fresh, clean smell. This will last
for several months.
Step
Seven
Congratulate yourself on a job well done. You may now reward
yourself with an exterior car wash.
Happy
Trails. |
