Make Your Own Holiday Traditions

With the holidays already upon us (again) many of us have already begun to think about turkey and dressing, pulling out our cherised holiday decorations and yet another growing laundry list of things to do as we prepare for the two "big days" aheah of us, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Before you add anything else to your list, think about and plan for a new special holiday tradition that you and your family will enjoy together.

About this time last year, the animated holiday movie, The Polar Express, debuted in the theaters. My husband and I decided to start a new family tradition for the holidays by waiting until the weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving by taking our children to see this holiday film. I'm glad we waited until the weekend before Thanksgiving. I hadn't been all that thrilled with going to see this movie just based on the commercial previews of the movie. By the end of the movie, I realized that I had been so fully engrossed in the storyline, the characters, and the moral of the story, our time in the theater had passed so quickly. Actor Tom Hanks, whose voice played five of the movie's characters, made the movie such a wonderful and compelling story. I would have sat through it again given the chance.

My point in all of this is not so much about the story and movie itself; it's the holiday tradition my family and started - going to see a holiday movie launched us into the holiday spirit and the beginning of our upcoming holiday festivities. This holiday season, perhaps you and your family will find the time to go and enjoy a holiday movie.

Our featured North Carolinian this month is Rita de Maintenon of Frankin, NC. This past summer Rita won the high honor of being invited to join the Southern Highland Craft Guild, a non-profit whose members are dedicated to preserving the highest standards in their craft-making. As one who enjoys an opportunity to sew and cross-stitch when time permits (which is almost never these days), I know first hand how tedious and laborious making hand-made crafts can be. But for those of us who enjoy "the process," it's well worth our time and energy to craft something out of bits and pieces of materials. When you read the interview with Rita and view photos of some of her hand-mades, you'll see what I mean.

Wishing you all the best for a safe and happy Thanksgiving,
