Women Build

The Women Build program was established by Habitat for Humanity to encourage the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat homes.

Women crews have already built more than 650 Habitat houses within the United States and they are now building in a dozen other countries. Women Build projects provide an environment in which women can feel comfortable learning skills they might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn.

Women Build is not about excluding men, it is about including women. The Women Build program enables women to discover for themselves that they can build Habitat homes.

While women building together offers tremendous empowerment, the benefits go beyond the individuals to transform the lives of families and their communities.

Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to actively address the problem of children living in poverty by building Habitat for Humanity houses. Safe, decent housing is critical to a child’s health and development, yet children are the single largest age group living in poverty. In the United States alone, more than 12 million children – one out of every six – live in poverty.

The need is great, but it can be met. Here is what you can do:

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County is building a Women Build house in South East Raleigh. Construction will begin in late September, 2005. It will take about 22 weeks to build the house. We will need 10-20 volunteers every Saturday to get the work done. We also need to raise $48,000 to pay for materials and for the professionally contracted parts of the house. Half that amount has already been pledged.

To volunteer to build, please go to www.habitatwake.org and look for the Women Build information on the Special Events page.

To make a donation, please make your check payable to Habitat for Humanity of Wake County and write “Women Build” on the memo line. All donations are tax-deductible.
