The
Great Outdoors
Ahhhhhhhh, the wonderful
sights, sounds and smells of Spring! I
could hardly wait for the grass to grow long enough for
the first season's cutting. Spring is clearly the season
of growth with all the signs of Mother Earth's renewal of
life once again. Birds chirpping, bees all
a'buzzin' and beautiful blossoming cherry blossom trees
right outside my own door.
The onset
of Spring awakens the senses and encourages us to step outside
and become an active part of life. Just in the
past couple of weeks, I've become much more active in my
yard moving plants and bushes around and planting many rose
bushes and tiny cherry blossom seedlings. At
the end of the workday, I look forward to spending an hour
or so "walking the yard" in search of little treasures
- tiny cherry blossom sprouts carefully nestled alongside
blades of grass too numerous to count. But
to the trained eye, I can quickly spot these little joys
that are just waiting to be plucked out of the ground and
replanted into small container pots. Now
into my second year of "walking the yard," I've
collected and nutured close to 200 seedlings that will eventually
grow into big beautiful blossoming trees. What
will I do with all of these growing seedlings? Well, I'm
not exactly sure; perhaps I'll give them as special gifts
to family and friends to help them see the joy and the beauty
of Mother Nature and the great outdoors.
Lieutenant
Governor Beverly Perdue, our featured North
Carolinian for April, is also opening some doors. Many
of the doorways where she stands will lead to a healthier
and a better quality of life for North Carolinians through
her work with the Health and Wellness Trust Fund. The
Journal would like to thank Lt.
Governor Perdue for taking the time to meet with Journal
contributor Marilyn Sprague-Smith for this month's feature
story.
April 22 is Earth
Day. For your quick reference, I've
included a couple of reference images with attached links
at the top of each page this month. I encourage you and
your family visit these linked sites to find out how to
reduce, recycle and reuse in support of Earth Day.
Wishing
you all the best,
Paula
