Will You Be Mine?

Next to the last few days of school and holiday gift giving, the month of February holds the promise of yet another fun-filled school party for young children. Children love taking part in their classroom Valentine's Day party as they exchange cards and prepare to eat chips, cookies and other fun snacks. Remember those little heart-shaped candies with messages of love and friendship stamped on them? What fun it was to open those little handwritten Valentine cards from our classmates and watch those candies fall out.

As we moved on from grade to grade, those Valentine parties became fewer and fewer. And even now as we have outgrown those school parties, Valentine's Day seems to just come and go. Wouldn't it be fun to do something different this year for Valentine's Day? Whether for a neighbor, coworker or family member, do something special; you can bring a smile and joy by giving some of those little candies neatly tucked inside those little Valentine cards. This month Journal contributor, Liza Weidle tells us about a some of the ways she and her family have celebrated Valentine's Day over the years. Read her story and perhaps you'll find your ideas to make the day special for others.

This month we welcome Varnell Vines Kinnin as our featured North Carolinian. Ms. Kinnin is the president of the North Carolina Federation of Business & Professional Women (BPW/NC) and oversees over 500 members across our state. As the second African American to hold this post, Ms. Kinnin is blazing trails from the mountains to the coast as she and the 25 BPW local organizations work for the advancement of women in business. Ms. Kinnin invites you to join a local BPW organization in your area to get involved, advance your career and make the way better for those young women coming along behind us.

Happy Valentine's Day!
